Wisconsin Protesters Torch Nearly 100 Used Cars Following Police Shooting

A car dealership in Kenosha, Wisconsin was burned along with nearly 100 vehicles following a riot over a police shooting.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Kenosha police officers responded to a “domestic incident” on Sunday. Part of the incident was caught on video and it shows 29-year-old Jacob Blake walking away from a group of police officers and opening the door to a Dodge Journey. As he starts to get inside, Blake is shot multiple times.

Blake is currently in serious condition and the shooting remains under investigation. However, the video quickly went viral and sparked a number of protests. These, unfortunately, turned violent and Kenosha sent out an emergency alert telling people about a citywide curfew and asking businesses to consider closing “due to numerous armed robberies and shots fired calls.”

Rioters eventually turned their attention to a used car dealership and WISN 12 reports witnesses told them “hundreds of protesters” converged on the scene. Video shows at least one of the vehicles had their rear window smashed and an apparent road flare ignited inside. The vehicle quickly went up in flames and the fire spread to other cars in the densely packed parking lot.

The owner of the dealership told the station they had more than 100 vehicles on the lot and most were destroyed in the ensuing inferno. A quick look at their inventory shows Car Source had 130 vehicles listed for sale and most of them were priced under $10,000 (£7,652 / €8,480).

While they weren’t exactly cream of the crop, the dealership’s inventory reveals a handful luxury models including a Range Rover, a Mercedes S-Class and a couple of BMW 5-Series sedans.
