GM To Install Up To 40,000 New Chargers In The U.S. And Canada

General Motors will install up to 40,000 Level 2 EV chargers across the United States and Canada as part of a $750 million investment to expand home, workplace, and public infrastructure through its Ultium Charge 360 ecosystem.

The automaker’s Dealer Community Charging Program will see it work with its dealers to deploy Ultium charging stations at key locations in the communities of respective dealers, starting from 2022. This will include workplaces, multi-unit dwellings, sports and entertainment venues, colleges, and universities, among others.

Almost 90 percent of the U.S. population lives within 10 miles of a GM dealership and these charging stations will be available to owners of all EVs.

GM has also confirmed that its new line of three Ultium-branded Level 2 smart charging stations will be offered to customers through dealerships and online, providing more home and commercial charging options.

“These two initiatives are part of our plan to put everyone in an EV, making access to charging even more seamless than before,” GM President Mark Reuss said in a statement. “We want to give customers the right tools and access to charging where and when they need it, while working with our dealer network to accelerate the expansion of accessible charging throughout the U.S. and Canada, including in underserved, rural, and urban areas.”

GM aims to address charging ‘deserts’ by giving each of its EV dealerships up to 10 Ultium Level 2 destination charging stations. The carmaker will also help dealers apply for incentives and other funding for access to programs that will expedite the deployment of local charging stations.

Meanwhile, the aforementioned Ultium-branded Level 2 smart charging stations consist of an 11.5 kW/48-amp smart charger, an 11.5 kW/48-amp premium smart charger, and a 19.2 kW/80-amp premium smart charger. All three units feature dynamic load balancing and can be upgraded through over-the-air updates.
